Metallic basalt kitchen combined with clay tones on the island
In this project, the kitchen was given a prominent place within the public space, as it serves as the beating heart of the home, where the family spends much of their time together.
It was essential to design ample storage and generous work surfaces, as well as to ensure that seating at the island was arranged face-to-face rather than in a row, encouraging better interaction between those seated. All of this was planned alongside a modern and contemporary design that still feels warm and inviting.
The layout consists of two parallel elements: a wall of tall storage units and a spacious island opposite. The tall units house the refrigerator, ovens, pantry, and additional storage. A window that initially posed a design challenge was cleverly integrated:
“I created a ‘box’ around the window, so the visual flow of the tall cabinets would remain uninterrupted, while also keeping the look light and airy,” explains the designer.
On the island, the sink and cooktop were strategically placed so whoever is cooking can maintain eye contact with the rest of the house — especially important with four energetic children running around. The island was also designed with six seating spots, three on each side, so diners can communicate comfortably.
When selecting materials, there was a strong focus on practicality as well as beauty. A surface material was chosen that is easy to clean and maintain, with a matte, velvety finish.
The tall units feature a metallic basalt tone, while the island introduces a warm clay color, giving it a striking presence within the space.
On the side facing the dining area, the island ends in a softly curved shape, supported by a unique, curved iron leg, creating a floating countertop effect — a distinctive design piece that elevates the entire project.
